Flora of Peninsular Malaysia – Fagaceae
[Updated June 2025] Welcome! These pages are the project site for the new Flora of Peninsular Malaysia – edition Fagaceae. Peninsular Malaysia is home to nearly 100 species of Fagaceae. The Peninsula forms a biogeographical bridge between continental Southeast Asia and insular Malesia, and its biological communities are a reflection of repeated historical cycles of forest expansion and contraction, taxa migrations and local differentiation and diversification. The Fagaceae community in Peninsular Malaysia therefore has strong evolutionary ties to Sumatra, Thailand and Borneo, and has many species in common with these regions.
Dr Joeri Sergej Strijk is preparing a fully illustrated taxonomic treatment for the family and conducting a major inventory and revision of existing collections at FRIM and other institutes. The new Flora is slated for in 2026-2027. All species information and a finalized checklist will be released here below in 2026.
