On these pages you will find information on the species of Fagaceae found in Brunei Darussalam. Three genera occur within Brunei, with an estimated total of 39 species (Castanopsis: 7; Lithocarpus: 28; Quercus: 4). Brunei is unique on Borneo in that either much of the extant forest has seen only selective timber extraction in the past, or is unlogged and set aside as protected forests. No species are commercially grown for timber, although some may be of local use. Nuts of some Lithocarpus and most Castanopsis species are edible and locally, and nuts of some species may be collected for bracelets or necklaces. As most of Brunei is characterized by lowland forest and elevational clines are rare, few sites exhibit the typical Fagaceae dominated vegetation of broad-leaved evergreen and mixed mesophytic forests between 500-3200 m. Some exceptions can be found on low hills (<250 m) with dry, open forest vegetation where several species appear hyperabundant (Castanopsis and Lithocarpus).
